Not much smaller than Leros, Lipsi makes do with combining its harbour and Chora virtually in one – you sit in the lovely little square outside the church and watch the ferries calling at the far end of the bay and look down on the yachts snuggling up against the quayside. The island is good for walks – several good beaches can be reached, but bring your own food and drink; additionally there are two sandy bays (reachable on foot, by scooter or minibus) with supporting tavernas for sustenance during the long boring days of bathing and sunbathing and gazing out to sea or the next island.

In fact there are at least seven “next” islands, all of which may be visited in a regular caique excursion, with stops for swimming and lunch. Also easy to reach is neighbouring Patmos, as little as 30 minutes sail away, with the stunning Monastery of St John the Divine guarding the now rather smart little quayside town of Skala with its shops and tavernas.

Lipsi is a fairly quiet island, but with plenty to do especially in the form of boat trips. The atmosphere is very laid back and friendly and many people return year after year. Obviously it can easily be combined with Patmos, Leros or Kalymnos for a multi-centre holiday and, like Leros, the gateway airport is Kos.
